Former Astros closer Ken Giles willing to give up World Series ring after cheating scandal

While many active Astros players have shown little to no remorse for their sign-stealing chicanery that helped them win the 2017 World Series, Blue Jays pitcher Ken Giles — who was the Astros' closer at the time — was apologetic in an interview with the Toronto Star, even saying he'd be willing to return his World Series ring. Giles had a strong season in 2017, posting a 2.39 ERA with a career-best 34 saves.
But he was far from his best during the postseason. Giles allowed at least one earned run in six of his seven outings (10 ER in 7.2 innings).
While the Astros went on to win it all despite his struggles, that victory now feels hollow to Giles. “It just hurts," Giles told the Star while looking back on the tainted championship. "If they want it back, I’ll be true to whatever needs to be done.
...
They’re going to feel like the bad guys all year. I know what it feels like to be the bad guy. And it’s not the greatest feeling.
But actions speak louder than words. I just hope they play honestly.” MORE: Trevor Bauer, Anthony Rizzo troll Astros over sign-stealing scandal in spring training Giles said he never knew that the team was cheating in 2017, as he spent most of his time in the bullpen, away from the dugout.
“I was not aware about anything,” Giles said. “It crushed me to learn about the stuff that went on when I was there. I had no idea.
I had no clue whatsoever. I was blindsided by the commissioner’s report. Up until then, I honestly didn’t believe it.
Just crazy.” Giles is the second player on the Astros' 2017 roster to say he'd give back his World Series ring. Oakland A's pitcher Mike Fiers, the whistleblower who revealed the Astros' sign-stealing scheme to the Athletic and set the baseball world on fire, told the San Francisco Chronicle it wouldn't be "the end of the world" to return his ring.
But Rob Manfred made it clear in his January commissioner's report that Astros players from that season wouldn't have to give up their hardware, saying he would uphold the "long tradition in baseball of not trying to change what happened." So there's no need to beat yourself up, Ken. If you went to bed early, you might have missed Ken Giles punching himself in the face.

The Houston Texans have moved to sign Randall Cobb after their shock decision to trade DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals. Wide receiver Cobb has agreed a three-year, $27 million deal with Houston that contains $18.75m in guarantees, according to NFL Network. The move came after star wideout Hopkins was stunningly sent to the Cardinals in a package that saw running back David Johnson move in the other direction. Jose Bautista is attempting a comeback as a two-way player: Does former MLB outfielder have a chance?

José Bautista could be coming to a bullpen near you. People are familiar with the former outfielder of Blue Jays fame for his propensity of launching dingers a long way, his bat flip and the one time he got decked by Rougned Odor. But Bautista, now 39, is attempting a comeback — with a twist. Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, Bautista has been working out in the Dominican Republic as both a hitter and a pitcher. That's right, Bautista is attempting to make a comeback as a two-way player. I've seen video of Jose Bautista throwing a bullpen session. Couldn't tell the velocity, but one source said he can run his fastball up to 94. His slider had legitimate tilt -- threw a short one and a bigger bender. @STR0 said in January he could pitch in a big league bullpen. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) March 2, 2020 Per Passan, Bautista can run his fastball up to 94 mph., which is nothing to thumb your nose at, especially since he is an aging player. Bautista also boasts a slider that a...
