What does XFL stand for? The meaning behind 'X' has everyone confused

The XFL has been born again, and if you're watching the start of the league's 2020 season, you might be wondering what exactly the X stands for. You already know the NFL, which stands for National Football League. So it's natural to assume that the "FL" in XFL stands for football league. But what about the X? There are only so many words that start with that letter, and only so many that are actually useful. Merriam Webster lists 138 words that start with X, ranging from two letters to 15. Based on the original league, which only lasted one season in 2001, you probably think the X stands for extreme, or something like Xtreme. But it turns out that's not the case. MORE XFL: Rules | Schedule | Uniforms | Rosters Despite Homer Simpson declaring it so, the X does not stand for Extreme or Xtreme. Vince McMahon did want it to, according to reports. But the "Xtreme Football League" name was already taken as the league was announced in 1999, the same year the XFL was founded. From Our Sports Central: The Xtreme Football League announced its formation at a news conference in Birmingham on April 20, 1999. The XFL was to be an Eastern U.S. indoor football league that planned to begin play in April 2000 with 10 to 12 teams, all of which were to be committed by June 1. The XFL's playing season was to be April through August. But that XFL never really formed as it merged with the Arena Football league before ever starting a game. So he schemed, when he announces for a new pro football league in February 2000. It was called the XFL. The letters, McMahon was quick to point out, didn't stand for anything. It wasn't the Xtreme Football League or the X-rated Football League, although those were dual implications of the ubiquitous twenty-fourth letter, which the American public had come to recognize as the default signpost for 'aggressive.' No, this was just XFL. Former Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman was also quoted in the book saying, "XFL stands for nothing at all? That's amazing. Only Vince McMahon would have something which means nothing stand for something." McMahon did joke, however, during the 2001 announcement for the league, “The NFL stands for the ‘No Fun League.' The XFL is going to be the ‘Xtra Fun League.'”

The Houston Texans have moved to sign Randall Cobb after their shock decision to trade DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals. Wide receiver Cobb has agreed a three-year, $27 million deal with Houston that contains $18.75m in guarantees, according to NFL Network. The move came after star wideout Hopkins was stunningly sent to the Cardinals in a package that saw running back David Johnson move in the other direction. TRADE GRADES: Cardinals hit home run with DeAndre Hopkins; Texans whiff on return Houston also netted a second-round draft pick this year and a fourth-rounder next year, while sending away their 2020 fourth-round selection. Jose Bautista is attempting a comeback as a two-way player: Does former MLB outfielder have a chance?

José Bautista could be coming to a bullpen near you. People are familiar with the former outfielder of Blue Jays fame for his propensity of launching dingers a long way, his bat flip and the one time he got decked by Rougned Odor. But Bautista, now 39, is attempting a comeback — with a twist. Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, Bautista has been working out in the Dominican Republic as both a hitter and a pitcher. That's right, Bautista is attempting to make a comeback as a two-way player. I've seen video of Jose Bautista throwing a bullpen session. Couldn't tell the velocity, but one source said he can run his fastball up to 94. His slider had legitimate tilt -- threw a short one and a bigger bender. @STR0 said in January he could pitch in a big league bullpen. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) March 2, 2020 Per Passan, Bautista can run his fastball up to 94 mph., which is nothing to thumb your nose at, especially since he is an aging player. Bautista also boasts a slider that a...
